Google – A Conflict Of Interest Waiting To Happen

June 29th, 2011 posted by admin

The sheer size of Google has led to promotion of conspiracy theories about the organization. Let us take the recent example of an ex CEO of Google admitting that they underestimated Facebook.

How can one be certain that this bit of information has not been suppressed by the search engine? Normally, we rely on Google to know more about any statement made by any reputed individual in the industry. However, what if the statement happens to be against the interests of the search engine? Criticisms made by a CEO of a data cleansing corporation may receive a lot of importance but the same statement made about Google may be suppressed. This may not have happened but who is to guarantee that this will not happen?

So far, the search engine has done a wonderful job of connecting people with the right set of results. However, Google began at a time when internet was not a global phenomenon. Rather, it was a technological innovation that was restricted to developed countries. Today, the Chinese market is one of the most lucrative search engine markets in the world. Google has been struggling to balance its ethical considerations with the immense profits involved in China.

On the whole, the fact that Google sits on top of the market and is deeply involved in the same means that a conflict of interest is, sooner or later, inevitable. Google performs the role of free press on the internet. However, it is important to consider that the press has to bear a lot of responsibilities for the benefits it enjoys. Who is going to bell the cat and insist that Google should set up the necessary infrastructure to ensure it cannot mislead its users.
